The Plough and Harrow is a public house and hotel on the Hagley Road, corner with Plough and Harrow Road in Ladywood. Grade II listed, dates to 1832-3. J. R. R. Tolkien once stayed here.

In brief

A Grade II listed building dating to 1832-3, designed by John Fallows for the Calthorpe Estate. There is a blue plaque here for J. R. R. Tolkien. As well as a pub, it is also a hotel under the name of the Best Western Plough and Harrow Hotel.

Plough and Harrow - history

The Plough and Harrow was a hotel built of red brick and stonestone dresssings from 1832 to 1833, from the designs of John Fallows for Calthorpe Estates.

The earliest part was built on the Hagley Road from 1832-3. while the extension appears to date from the 1870s or 1880s.

The author J. R. R. Tolkien, who used to live in the area, stayed at The Plough and Harrow once during June 1916, this is recorded by a blue plaque from The Tolkien Society, which was put up in June 1997.

It is now the  Best Western Plough and Harrow Hotel.
